Amarillo—For 11 years, she’s been a mainstay in the diocesan office of Development and Stewardship, assisting parishes in the annual United Catholic Appeal and helping to maintain order amidst all the paperwork generated for requesting grants.
On Wednesday, Dec. 1, Gladys Meyer will put all of that behind her and sleep in, thus beginning the next chapter of her life.
Meyer will retire from her position as secretary of the diocesan office of Development and Stewardship on Tuesday, Nov. 30. Veronica Moreno, a parishioner at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Dumas, will replace Meyer.
Meyer began her employment with the Diocese of Amarillo in 1999, hired by Nancy Koons, former diocesan director of Development and Stewardship.
“I had been involved in a lot of volunteer work before, with the Catholic Student Center and at St. Ann’s in Canyon and St. Mary’s in Umbarger,” said Meyer. “When Nancy approached me about this job, I was a life coach in the Canyon school system. I was glad to take this job, because I spent most of my time as a life coach on my feet. I was a little hesitant to take this job, because that meant I didn’t have summers off anymore.”
What’s next for Gladys Meyer?
“Besides sleeping in, I hope to help my son Brian with his two children,” she said. “I also hope to travel. I’ve always wanted to go to Hawaii, but I also hope to do some road trips, where I don’t have to worry about being back at a certain time. I’ll also help my husband as needed at his business, Meyer’s Repair Shop in Umbarger.”
What did she enjoy most about her time at the Diocesan Pastoral Center?
“I loved my work,” she said. “I loved working with the people I’ve worked with. I’ll miss seeing talking to and seeing the people from the different parishes in the diocese. But I intend to continue my volunteer work on the parish and diocesan level.”
