St. Ambrose wrote, “See where Baptism comes from, if not from the Cross of Christ. There is the whole mystery: he died for you. In him you are redeemed, and saved” from sin and the Evil One.(St. Ambrose, De sacr. 2,2 6:PL 16, 444; cf. Jn. 3:5)
The Father is so merciful that he generously offered us more…much more. In this simple washing with water blessed by the presence of the Holy Spirit(CCC # 1238) much happened to the one baptized.
“All sins are forgiven, original sin and all personal sins as well.”{CCC # 1262 Council of Florence)
“Baptism makes the baptized a ‘new creation’, or a new person”.(Cor. 5:17).
The baptized become a “partaker of the divine nature”(2 Pt 1:4) “That through his great promises you may come to share in the Divine Nature.”(1 Pt. 1:4) Or “As proof that you are children, God sent the spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying out, ‘Abba, Father!’”(Gal 4:5-7)
The baptized becomes a “member of Christ and a co-heir with him”, (CCC # 1265)“and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.”(Rom. 8:17)
A “Temple of the Holy Spirit.”(CCC # 1265)“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you?”(1 Cor. 6:19)
Baptism makes us “members of the Body of Christ”(CCC # 1267) and therefore “members one of another”. ( Eph. 5:25) Hence, we are not individuals before God; rather, we are members of the Body, a Communion of believers who rely on each other for mutual support. “We are a chosen race…Living stones” that make up the spiritual temple of God. (1 Pt. 2:5)
Finally, as St. John describes so well in his Letters, we must keep the love commandment that we have from Jesus Christ.“God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him.” (1Jn. 4:16b)Whoever loves God must also love his brother.”(1Jn. 4:21)
We are also called to the “a holy priesthood” hence, we are to be a people of prayer and sacrifice of self for others. We share in the “prophetic office” of the Church; hence, we are called to teach and encourage each other in the ways of our Faith. We are also a “kingly people”; (1 Pt. 2:9) hence, a people called to serve one another.
An ancient homily from the beginning of the Second Century of the Christian Era reveals the belief of the early Church in regard to the loving mercy of God. “Awake! O sleeper! Arise, come forth, I have not created you for this. I created you for life, not death. Arise and come with me. I will not restore you to the Garden. I will give you life. You will sit at my right in the Kingdom reign with me This is remarkably similar to Paul’s Letter to Timothy which reads:“If we have died with him, we shall also live with him. If we preserve, we shall also reign with him.”(2 Tim. 2:11-12)
Baptism is really a generous gift to those called to follow Christ. It is also indicative of the generous merciful love that the Father has for human beings.
Be Merciful as your Father is Merciful
